Tasting note
Reserve Red is a multi-regional blend built on the idea of wanting to create a rich red with
balance. Here, the Merlot offers fruit weight and generosity, while the Pinot Noir lends elegance and freshness, while the depth of flavour and ultimately the wine’s overall complexity comes from just the smallest portion of Tempranillo. Crafting a wine like this from one region, one variety or one vineyard seems out of reach, hence the need to draw inspiration from all over.

Vintage and viticulture
The Merlot (85%) was sourced from the Endeavour Vineyard in Bridge Pa, Hawke’s Bay and the Pinot Noir (13%) and Tempranillo (2%) from the Trig Hill Vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago. Both vineyards are certified organic (BioGro), and both are from mostly ancient alluvial riverbed but with some schist and quartz in the south. 2022 was quite a wide and varied vintage between these two regions – more than a month apart – where the Merlot was picked early to retain freshness and purity of fruit, while the Pinot Noir and Tempranillo were given their full time on the vine to develop in maturity and flavour. All fruit was refrigerated and transported to Marlborough for vinification.

Vinification
The Merlot was hand harvested, destemmed, fermented and matured in stainless steel tank. The Pinot Noir was hand harvested, whole bunch fermented in stainless steel and then matured in large format French oak. The Tempranillo was hand harvested, destemmed, fermented in stainless steel and then matured in a single French oak barrique. Once fermented the three were blended together and matured for three more months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined (vegan).
