2020 Jérôme Jouret 'L'Accroche Cœur' Merlot Syrah
Jerome Jouret is a humble vigneron located in the Southern Ardèche (Southwest France) where he and his wife Stéphanie organically farm 12 hectares of close-planted vines on the steep, stony lopes of the Vallée de l’Ibie. Since leaving his local co-op in 2006, Jérôme has gained a lot of attention for producing wines quite unlike his neighbours – aromatic, fresh, juicy and low in alcohol. Carbonic maceration is a theme found in all of his wines.
Jérôme’s vineyards are on predominately clay and limestone soils. They are all worked organically, plowed manually by hand even and have never seen any synthetic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or systemic fungicides since being planted in the 80s. All his wines are wild fermented, unadjusted, unfiltered, unfined (vegan), and with no added sulphites. While these are 'zero-zero', truly natural wines, they are beautiful, clean, and well-made and can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone.
L'Accroche Cœur is 70% Merlot, 30% Syrah from 35yo vines planted on chalky limestone and clay soils. Organically farmed, then hand harvested, the Syrah was direct pressed into tank, while the Merlot was destemmed and macerated in the Syrah juice before being pressed. 6 months in concrete tanks then 8 months in aged French oak barriques. Bottled unfiltered, unfined and without any added sulphites.
While this wine is denser and darker than En Avant Doute (100% Grenache), it's still incredibly fluid and gentle in nature. There's brambly, spicy notes, some body too, but no overwhelming tannin or extraction to speak of. As with all of Jérôme's wines, they are incredibly clean and polished, and some of the best examples of no SO2 wines we have in our portfolio. Some rof you may remember Hervé Souhaut's Merlot/Syrah blend from the Ardèche a few years back - this wine pulls me right back to this! Drink this when looking for something a bit rich, but not jammy or boozy.
