2019 Escoda-Sanahuja 'Els Bassotets' Chenin Blanc blend
The 2019 vintage of Els Bassotets has been tweaked again - this time to 40% Chenin Blanc, 30% Macabeu, 10% Garnaxta Blanca (White Grenache) and 20% Parellada. Harvested and fermented together as a field blend, the wine was wild fermented on its skins for 5 days (maceration kept so light and gentle this is almost not apparent), then matured in concrete to be bottled unfiltered, unfined and without any added sulphites 10 months later.
Yet again Joan-Ramon finds that beautiful juxtapose between fruit concentration and lightness here. I always feel like there's some kind of miracle work happening , because the wine is low in alcohol (11.5%), yet always fully developed in fruit flavour (ripeness), it's light on its feet without being searing, and somehow delivers texture and body, while remaining refreshing and saline all the same.
The Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeu were original plantings at the Escoda-Sanahuja vineyard from 1920. Chenin came in 2000. Parellada in 2012. Total allocation this year just 4 cases!
